I have used the ICOM HM-46L Speaker Microphone with the OPC-1797 successfully. The OPC-1797 terminates into two recepticals. One is for the "Miniture" monural 3.5mm (1/8") TS speaker plug and the other is a "Subminiture" stereo 2.5mm (3/32") TRS Microphone plug. "When connecting a monaural plug to 2.5 (d) mm, it acts as a short and becomes a cause of failure." In other words always use accessories which have the "Subminiture" stereo TRS plug to prevent shorts! I think it goes without saying but I will repeat it anyway... ALWAYS "Turn power OFF when connecting or disconnecting the OPC-1797." or the OPC-1799 Data Communications Cable. This includes pluging the microphone into the OPC-1797 while connected to the radio! Also don't try using TRRS Cables which are common with todays cell phones and Yaesu Handhelds. It two could short the contacts in the OPC-1797 Connection Cable.
