ORIGINAL: WB6HTS Once again a serial cable and NOT a USB that comes with the 92AD ????? Well, there are several reasons why one might adjudicate the DB-9 type cable to be a more preferential position to be in with regard to a factory cable, than to be given a USB version. 1) If you purchase a DB-9 type of cable (as is being referenced herein above) you have the option to add a $9 DB-9 to USB cable for USB ports, and as well be able to use it in DB-9 mode for non-USB based systems. Now clearly this provisions a far more expansive level of flexibility that to be forced strictly to using USB. 2) If you are a protocol weenie and want to monitor the communications between the radio and the USB or Serial port, having a DB-9 there within allows for taps to be placed in between so that one can take the TX pin and put it on the RX pin of a 2nd serial port, and the same with putting the RX pin on the RX pin of a 3rd serial port. 3) It is far easier (for me) to pick a DB-9 to USB cable that can run under alternative operating systems (Linux, MacOS, Solaris X86, etc...) then to be forced to have Icom choose the USB to Serial port chipset, perhaps from a manufacturer that fails to support Linux, MacOS, or Solaris X86. This would then allow one to watch on each of the two additional serial ports (with appropriate data scoping software) what is going to and from the radio. This is not so simple when using a USB type cable either. Thus, one can clearly see the folly in the conclusion that is alluded to in the quoted text; well, unless the poor ham cannot afford the extra $9, but then, if you cannot, D-STAR is not the mode for you either! :)
