Howard_Z -> Icom 91AD replacement HT antenna (2/16/2007 7:01:09 AM)

Has anyone replaced the 91AD stock antenna with a better antenna?

I have read good reviews of the Comet BNC24/SMA24, but it doesn't say it supports wideband receive.

Please share your experiences with replacement HT antennas.
Thanks

I replaced mine with the Diamond SRH77CA which ia a 1/4 wave antenna. 2.15 db gain on UHF & 1/2 wave gain on VHF. Covers  8 band coverages. 2 amateur and 6 others. 120, 150, 300, 450. 800, 900.
This as a great replacement. There is a very small gap at the bottom and wont screw down all of the way. Easy fix was for me to go to our local home depot plumbers section and get an exact fit runner "O" ring. Slipped it on, tightened antenna down the SMA connector and  BINGO. That was it. Also makes the connection water tight as well. Antenna was about $24.00 or so at your local Ham shop.

I replaced the stock antenna with a Diamond SRH320A.  While it is a pricey little antenna, I have been very happy with it's performance.  My office is on the outskirts of our D-Star repeater coverage area and I couldn't get in with the stock antenna.  This antenna gets me in consistently.

I use either the Diamond RH77CA or the Maldol MH-209, mounted through a SMC/BNC adapter (one that has a good rubber seal to the radio).

Note that you can't get something for nothing;  an antenna with good VHF/UHF gain is NOT going to have wideband receive.

I've used three non-Icom antennas with the 91AD, and the one that suits me best is the MFJ "Ultralight-S" that comes with nine feet of thin, flexible coax, hard-wired at one end to the antenna, and the other end of the coax has a SMA connector fitting directly to the 91AD.  The unusually light-weight coax and light-weight antenna allows the antenna to be easily elevated, or placed elsewhere for better signal strength.  The mini magnetic mount holds the antenna on the car roof, or on top of an outdoor lamp or other metal object outside the shack.  This "Ultralight" model number is MFJ-1722-S.  See specs, below.  The "S" model of this antenna has the required SMA connector for direct connection to the Icom 91AD without the need for adaptors.

There is another model of the -1722, with a different connector, so, when ordering, ensure you are asking for the "S" version with the SMA connector.

The user can also unscrew the stock antenna element from the -1722-S's magnetic mount base, and replace the element with a another pre-cut element of different length, for different band usage, as desired, using the standard formula for element lengths.

Advertised Specs for this anetnna follow:  144-148 MHz plus 420-450 Mhz.  2.5dB gain on 2-Meters, and 3-dB gain on 440-MHz band.  VSWR less than 1.5:1.  50-Ohm, of course.  Radiator is a 20-inch stainless steel black whip, very thin, and one which is very difficult to notice when mounted on top of the car.   ((I cut off the top 5/8" of the antenna for better SWR on the frequencies I use most.))  The coax is nine feet, of the very thin RG-174U, hard-wired to the magnetic antenna base.  Power: 50-Watts on 144 MHz band, and 25-Watts max on the 440-MHz band.   See photo at www MFJEnterprises (dot) com .  Call order at 601-323-5869 or -0549.    73 and good luck, from W2OR.

I ended up purchasing the Comet SH-95
Only available with BNC, so I'm using a BNC/SMA converter.

It has broadband receive from 100Mhz to 1200Mhz.
Supports 2m, 70cm, and 23cm.
Yeah, I know my radio doesn't operate at 23cm.

The factory antenna was pathetic on HF, and the SH-95 has absolutely no HF.
On VHF and UHF I see a definite improvement.
I can now hear my local weather station clearly.
I can talk on the local 2m repeater at 0.5 watts - though people say I sound better at 5.0 watts.

The antenna seems rather wobbly - I would have preferred it be a little more stiff.

The comet SMA-24/BNC-24 has a little more gain, but no wide band receive.

P.S. TV Audio reception is good from channel 1 up.
Channel 1 is very loud - I have no idea what TV channel 1 is.
TV Audio goes from around 80Mhz to cell phone (800Mhz?) and is a good example of broadband receive.
Channel 13 - a Baltimore station - comes in better with the new antenna.

KH6MEI -> RE: Icom 91AD replacement HT antenna (3/5/2007 1:43:13 AM)

I purchase one each of these antennas, the sma24 and bnc24 and am quite happy with them.  They both work on the wide recieve.

Has anyone tried the JTH-2 from Jetstream? It looks like the Diamond SRH320A, but cheaper. Anyone tried it yet?
