n5mij -> D-Star 101 Class (6/5/2006 1:49:32 PM)

There's been a lot of discussion about how D-Star works, and a lot of new repeaters purchased, too.  That presents us an opportunity.

How many folks would be interested in attending a one-day class on the fundamentals of D-Star and the details of gateway administration, potentially to be held in the Dallas area on Saturday, July 22?  We could cover things like basic operation, construction & testing of a new gateway prior to implementation, and the process necessary for successfully putting a new gateway on the network.   Since the construction and configuration of the gateways is almost identical for all gateways, we could actually build some gateways and have them ready for individual configuration.  We could also discuss the implications of public vs. private D-Star network systems.

Part of what I'm considering is the most efficient way to explain gateway operation to all the new repeater owners, in a short period of time.  Since D-Star is still very much a user-supported system, efficiency in training counts!

This is not yet definite, but could come together nicely, if there is sufficient interest.  If you'd commit to attending, please let me know by responding here.  I'll determine the level of interest, and post a definitive "Yes" or "No" by early next week, so everyone could make cost-effective plans.

Hi Jim,

My guess is there will be some folks that can't make it and some that come along after. So when / if you do the class how about filming it and distributing it as a podcast. I would be happy to volunteer an intern and an edit suite here in Atlanta to put it together and then it could be distributed via internet and also by DVD if that proved viable.

Jim, I would be very interested.  If you decide to do this I would like to help spread the word among folks in central Texas who are not currently involved with D-Star.

July 15 or 29 would work for me and I would attend.

ki4hlw -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/5/2006 10:34:06 PM)

If a podcast, mpeg, or Powerpont are created from this I'd be happy to host it @ www.d-starradio.org

Phiber -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/6/2006 5:38:50 AM)

July 22nd seems to work just fine, although the 29th looks like it would be better.

als -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/7/2006 10:04:23 AM)

Jim, I think this is a great kick off to what should be a long and interesting road into the future. With all of the new systems coming on-line we need to get basic setup information into the hands of the System Administrators before they dive off the deep end. Having learned the hard and sometimes fun way I would recommend this for any soon to be DStar administrators.

Either date works for so you can count me in!

July 29, would work better for me, but I could do the 22nd if necessary.

n5mij -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/7/2006 6:59:00 PM)

I know that the 29th would work better for many, but we're challenged with the fact that one of the key folks, Bill Moore (N5ZPR)  is a full-time firefighter, and is on duty on the 29th.  That's one of the reasons we're shooting for the 22nd.

We'll do some discussion at Hamcom this weekend, and watch the forum here as well.  I'll make a formal announcement early next week with specifics.  Right now, things look promising.

If you're interested in learning some more about D-Star, and a lot about how the gateway system really works, please consider joining us.  If the level of interest supports it, this will be the first annual D-Star Users Group meeting & training session.

Jim

Phiber -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/8/2006 5:14:33 AM)

22nd is going to work a whole lot better now. Also, I second the notion of filming the class along with good audio. Something of professional spec. and quality.

k6biv -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/8/2006 6:24:15 AM)

Hello:

July 22, 2006 is the only Saturday in July that I can NOT make it. I have a trade show in Long Beach.

I'm sorry I will miss it..

smcrae -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/8/2006 7:17:46 PM)

I would be interested also.

I have a new Sony HD camcorder if we want to archive the class for those that cannot attend.

Phiber -> RE: D-Star 101 Class (6/9/2006 7:41:56 AM)

That would be real cool to have good video of the presentation. We could present it for download and burn it on cd's. I'd be willing to but 50 or so CD's and burn the presentation. I'm sure my local HAM store wouldn't mind me putting 'em in the shop.

n5mij -> D-Star 101 Class is ON!!! (6/13/2006 7:56:20 AM)

Enough people have expressed an interest in the class that we're going to do it.

The day-long session will be held on Saturday, July 22, from 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM, at the University of Texas at Arlington, in Arlington, Texas.  Dave Davis, WB5WIA, will post a note with specific directions to the site.  Arlington is central to Dallas and Ft. Worth.  The area has lots of hotels, and is only a very short ride from DFW airport.

Some of the topics we'll cover will include:

  • D-Star concepts
  • D-Star Gateway concepts
  • D-Star User operation
  • Call sign configuration for local voice operation
  • Call sign configuration for gateway voice operation
  • Call sign configuration for data operation
  • Gateway installation & original configuration
  • Setting up new users
  • Gateway maintenance
  • Pitfalls and Traps (THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE!)
  • General discussion

I recommend that folks arrive at DFW on Friday evening, and be ready to get started early on Saturday morning.  If you can do so, plan to stay over Saturday night.  You're going to want to be here for the entire class - there's a LOT of stuff to cover.  We're going to try to give everyone enough information to be successful in bringing up all the repeaters that have been sold, and get the users running as painlessly as possible.

If we get started now, everyone should still be able to get good prices on flights.

Putting up a D-Star system and getting it connected to the D-Star Network is NOT a brief discussion, or a simple exercise.  But this class will give you enough information that you can be confident and successful in your efforts.

I hope to see you there.

73,
Jim

wb5wia -> RE: D-Star 101 Class is ON!!! (6/13/2006 2:59:19 PM)

The University of Texas at Arlington College of Engineering welcomes the D-Star training session.  The class will be held in a classroom that opens off the Engineering Atrium, in Nedderman Hall.  A campus map showing the building and surrounding area can be viewed here: http://www.uta.edu/maps/map?id=nh .

Parling will be in the lot just to the North of UTA Blvd, and you will have to walk 1 block South to get to our building.

Come to Arlington via either I-30/Tom Landry or I-20/Ronald Reagan.  From I-30, take the Cooper St. exit, turn South on Cooper, and procede to UTA Blvd. (appx 2 miles).  Turn left on UTA Blvd, and the parking will be the first drive on your left.  From I-20, take the Cooper street exit and go north appx 7 miles to UTA Blvd.  Turn right, and parking will be the first drive on your left.

We will attempt to do a talk in, with the frequency to be announced later.

See you in July

I might be NICE if someone local could find a reasonable priced motel/hotel and everyone coming in stayed the same place.

k6biv -> RE: D-Star 101 Class is ON!!! (6/19/2006 11:42:27 AM)

Hello All:

I just made arrangements to attend this meeting. See you all in DFW.

For those attending the class, here's a list of frequencies for our group in the DFW area.  Try the digital (D-Star) channels first.  Someone should be monitoring all.

1293.000 (-20.00)

Analog
224.600 (-1.60) (156.7)
443.475 (+5.00) (156.7)
1292.600 (-20.00) (156.7)
